Tehama-Glenn Fire Safe Council Fire Prevention Education Program
Ice Cream Social in Elk Creek - June 14, 2024 - Click here for invitation
The Tehama-Glenn Fire Safe Council Fire Prevention Education Program (Project) is a collaborative effort between the Resource Conservation District of Tehama County (RCDTC) and the Glenn County Resource Conservation District (GCRCD), funded by the California Department of Forestry & Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) California Climate Investments Fire Prevention Grants Program.
This is the first project of the Tehama-Glenn Fire Safe Council (TGFSC), which was formed in 2000 ‘to address issues related to wildfire and fire safety through community-based Fire Prevention Education’. Although the TGFSC is formally recognized as a Fire Safe Council by the California Fire Safe Council, it is not a non-profit so cannot receive grant funding directly. RCDTC and GCRCD jointly coordinate the activities of TGFSC offering an efficient and effective approach to coordinating protection of homes, communities and environments from wildfire; in this case GCRCD is the Project’s sponsoring organization while RCDTC is a partnering contractor to ensure Project success.
Ultimately, this Fire Prevention Education Program aims to collaboratively reduce hazardous fuels thus number of ignitions of wildfires and ultimately reduce greenhouse gas emissions through increased awareness, knowledge, ownership, and application; Wildland-Urban Interfaces (WUI) are being informed that meeting CAL FIRE Defensible Space Inspection criteria by having fire resistant landscaping and hardening of structures is key to reducing wildfire emissions, and reduces costs association with catastrophic fires. This Project also aims to reduce the risk of wildland fires to habitable structures and communities, while maximizing carbon sequestration in healthy wildland habitat and minimizing the uncontrolled release of emissions emitted by wildfires.
Specifically, this Project is creating a community-based Fire Prevention Education Program to increase awareness and knowledge that can be used to reduce the total number of wildland fire ignitions, lessen acres burned, and protect life and habitable/non-habitable structures from catastrophic loss. This Project is offering the following to our communities:
- “Ice-cream social style” interactive workshops in Manton WUI and Elk Creek WUI (wildland-urban interface)
- Two Fire Prevention Education publications tailored to each focused WUI
- Signs posted within the Project area, to bring attention to the importance of fire prevention
- Enhanced partnerships with emergency response services (local, state & federal)
On June 14, 2019, the Glenn County RCD held its first Ice Cream Social in Elk Creek to bring the community together with the First Responders.
On May 4, 2019, the RCD of Tehama County held its first Ice Cream Soical in Manton during the Manton Mountain Fair.
Funding for this project provided by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection as part of the California Climate Investments Program.
The Tehama-Glenn Fire Safe Council Fire Prevention Education Program is part of California Climate Investments, a statewide program that puts billions of Cap-And-Trade Dollars to work reducing GHG emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment-particularly in disadvantaged communities. The Cap-and-Trade program also creates a financial incentive for industries to invest in clean technologies and develop innovative ways to reduce pollution. California Climate Investments projects include affordable housing, renewable energy, public transportation, zero-emission vehicles, environmental restoration, more sustainable agriculture, recycling, and much more. At least 35 percent of these investments are located within and benefiting residents of disadvantaged communities, low-income communities, and low-income households across California.
